Stop-Motion Adventure
Moon & Minnow
I created this project because I strongly connect to the incredible blessing of having an older sister. I am attracted to work that involves getting dirty, as I often tire of being glued to a screen as a means of creation. In this body of work, I combine sculptural techniques with acrylic paint application, creating a collection of characters that speak to children attracted to the macabre- centered around a dynamic of an older and younger sister. This results in a dynamic between characters that is natural and emotional. Watch the full title sequence here: https://youtu.be/CKvGwjjIMqU

All design, directing, editing, filming, songwriting, song recording, set building, character building, and concept by me. Enjoy!

Process
First, I create armature skeletons, bulking them with clay where needed. Then, I begin cutting and wrapping polymer clay around the sculptures, sometimes introducing texture into the clay application. I then started to fall in love with the surface and the form of different bodies and how they would move with each other. Clay is a beautiful material for making mistakes. Decisions are only permanent once the film is made, so now is the time to play.
Characters
I design characters digitally to apply color and finishing touches. The character designs are clear at this point, but each brush stroke is an opportunity to celebrate the different decisions we can make about this character. It is exhilarating to hold a character design in your own hands once it is built.
Before creating the movable characters for animating, I created larger maquettes to establish the color and size relationships along with how they will exist in their space.
